For those who are brand new to exercise, all of the various
terms can be confusing and frustrating.
CrossFit, HIIT, LISS…what do all of these terms mean!?
While it would take far too long to outline all of the
different terms related to exercise, we can take this opportunity to provide
some clarity on the difference between CrossFit and HIIT. These are two
seemingly identical exercise modes in many people’s eyes. However, there are
some key differences between these two types of workouts.
HIIT Workouts
HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training.
Essentially, this entails a workout in which the exerciser performs a very
taxing movement for a given period of time and then performs a less taxing
movement for a period of time.
The specific movements and time intervals can be manipulated
in order to make these workouts harder or easier. But, often, HIIT workouts are
performed with cardiovascular movements, such as riding an exercise bike with a 1:1 or 1:2 work-to-rest ratio.
An example of a HIIT workout is sprinting on a treadmill for
30 seconds at 80% of heart rate max, then walking for one minute at 30% of
heart rate max. These sprints and relative rest periods could be performed in
this alternating manner for 10 rounds. This would be an example of a 1:2 work-to-rest ratio.
HIIT workouts appeal to many people because they burn tons of calories and they provide a quick, efficient exercise session. As you can see in the example above, the entire workout would be complete in roughly 15 minutes total!
CrossFit Workouts
CrossFit workouts are a different but related form of
exercise. A CrossFit workout incorporates different modes of fitness and often
borrows movements from different sports.
Because CrossFit is a general term for a style of exercise,
it CAN be a HIIT workout. However, not all CrossFit workouts are HIIT workouts.
For example, some CrossFit workouts incorporate circuit training without manipulating
intervals or intensity levels.
The Venn Diagram
If you picture a Venn diagram, you can get a good idea of
how CrossFit and HIIT relate to one another.
Imagine one circle that contains all things CrossFit and
one circle that contains all things HIIT. Some elements of both circles will overlap. That being said, there will also be elements of both
circles that will stand alone and will not necessarily crossover.
The Major Takeaway
CrossFit and HIIT are two valuable and popular forms of
exercise. They are related to one another but not exactly equal.
However, for most people who are new to exercise, this
distinction is relatively inconsequential.
The most important thing to remember is that exercise of any
kind is better than a sedentary lifestyle. Sedentary behavior has been
associated with higher risks of disease, pain, and disability. Even light
physical activity, such as 30-minute walks, 5 days a week, can counteract the
effects of sedentary behavior.
Therefore, whether you choose to perform HIIT workouts, CrossFit exercises, yoga, or any other movement style, you’re improving your health significantly.
